A weeklong outreach programme covering as many as 614 people from five different villages was successfully carried out and concluded on Tuesday, in which the prevailing child rights issues were thoroughly enlightened.
Media in-charge of the programme, Nehemiah Newmei said that the programme was conducted by a team of Childline Service Tamenglong (CLST) under the ‘Someone Who Cares Is A Phone Call Away’ and it commenced on February 23.
During the programme, the team mainly focused on the children in order to make them aware of their rights and services available for them under the childline. The responsibilities of the village leaders, parents and guardians were also emphasised as they play a vital role in ensuring the rights of children.
Among the topics shared, the team stressed on child trafficking issues as it is relevant in the particular areas, so as to make them aware of the root cause of trafficking and ways to prevent it.
The CLST team reached out to Taningjam village, Upper Phellong village, Phelong-1 village, Namtiram village and Azuram village and elaborated the vision of the childline service to create a child friendly society that guarantees the rights and protection of all children. They also shared the mission of childline to reach out to every child in need and ensure their rights and protection through connection, collaboration and communication. The team also shared how helpline number ‘1098’ works and shared the landline numbers.
Further, various child rights were highlighted such as right to an identity, right to health, right to compulsory education, right to family life, right to be protected from any forms of violence, right to an opinion, right to be protected from armed conflict, right to be protected from exploitation and right to survival.
Many pamphlets were distributed and posters on childline service were pasted in some strategic points of the villages.
Out of 614 people who participated in the programme, 417 were children and 197 were adults from the five villages.
