War on Drugs 2.0: Drone used for first time to destroy poppy fields in Manipur

Kangpokpi district police used a drone to spray herbicides as a part of the poppy destruction drive at Mongjang village hill range in Kangpokpi district on Monday.

For the first time ever in Manipur, as a part of the poppy destruction drive under “War on Drugs 2.0”, Kangpokpi district police used a drone to spray herbicides at a hill range in Kangpokpi district on Monday.

A combined team of Kangpokpi district police, IRB, Manipur Rifles, Forest department, NAB and others conducted the poppy destruction drive at the hill range located at Mongjang village in Kangpokpi district.

In a video post uploaded by Chief Minister N Biren Singh on his official Facebook page, superintendent of police of Kangpokpi district, Th Vikramjit, said the district police is using drone for spraying of herbicides as a part of the poppy destruction drive on trial basis despite earlier method of destruction.

He said the combined team is targeting to destroy around 25-30 acres of poppy plants cultivated illegally in the area.

“Pleased to see that security forces, teams of the forest department and officials of district administration, etc. are diligently carrying out the tasks of destroying poppy plantations with coordination at targeted areas. Spraying of herbicides by using drone technology was also successfully carried out during a mass poppy destruction drive carried out at Mongjang village under Saikul Police Station in Kangpokpi district today,” the caption read.

On Tuesday, the chief minister uploaded another photo of poppy destruction carried out at Lhangsom village, Kangpokpi district. The caption of the photo read as “Around 15 acres of poppy plantations were destroyed at Lhangsom Village under Saikul Police Station in Kangpokpi district, Manipur today.

"The drive was carried out by around 273 officers and personnel of District Police Kangpokpi, MPTC, 5th IRB, 6 IRB, 1MR, Forest, NAB, and 22 AR of Saikul COB as a part of the state government’s War on Drugs 2.0 campaign. The destruction will continue till sunset”.
