An attempt to conduct a land survey for expansion of state highway at Haikot village under Machi police station in Tengnoupal district was met with stiff opposition from villagers on Monday, resulting in a major scuffle with police which left one villager injured.
Revenue and PWD department officials with a police team attempted to carry out the survey at the state highway connecting Shangshak from Tengnoupal around 3.10 pm, as per sources.
As the officials started the survey, around 60 residents of Haikot village came out and stopped them, sources said.
The villagers declared that no survey would be permitted unless the affected villagers and the state government come to an agreement.
As the situation escalated, additional forces which included commando teams were called in, and they fired an indefinite number of tear-gas shells to bring the situation under control.
During the police action, one woman villager from Haikot village sustained injury after being hit by a tear gas shell on her forehead, as per sources.
The injured villager has been identified as one Vahshi, 37, wife of Lhunkholet from Haikot village, sources said.
The survey was successfully carried out later after the situation was brought under control. Police are keeping a strict vigil at the area to prevent further untoward incidents, it added.
