Van Driver Death Case: Couple arrested

The body of a missing van driver from Manipur was recovered from near Kedima Veswama Bypass road under Khuzhama Police Station in Nagaland on Saturday.

A couple involved in the alleged killing of a van driver, who had gone missing since December 30, has been arrested while the body of the deceased was recovered from near Kedima Veswama Bypass road under Khuzhama Police Station in Nagaland on Saturday.

The deceased driver and owner of the Eco Van (MN01AS-7696) has been identified as one Yanglem Priyobrata, 48, son of Y Kesho from Nachou Awang Leikai, Ward No II in Bishnupur district.

After returning from Moreh around 9 pm on December 30, the deceased had called his wife to inform her over the phone that he would be leaving again to Dimapur, as per sources. The deceased had told her that he would be leaving with the couple whom he had traveled with earlier, the sources said. Later, Priyobrata lost connection with his family, the source mentioned.

According to family members, Heisnam James from Lamboi Khongnangkhong was among those who went to search for Priyobrata at Khuzhama.

Heisnam James, 32, son of H Kumar from Lamboi Khongnangkhong under Lamphel Police Station, Imphal West was taken to Bishnupur Police Station on January 4 for questioning but he could not provide any information and therefore, he was released, according to family members.

James has a history of pawning off vehicles he had borrowed from others and was involved in many such cases, the sources said.

During an interrogation carried out by Irilbung Police Station regarding a similar case, it was revealed that James had killed Y Priyobrata and left the body at Kedima Veswama Bypass under Khuzhama Police Station in Nagaland.

OC Bishnupur was informed by OC Irilbung that James had murdered Y Priyobrata and he was handed over to the latter.

Around 11.30 am on Saturday, a team of Bishnupur Police Station found the mortal remains of Y Priyobrata from under a large culvert which is located at a deserted spot near Kedima Veswama Bypass.

The body was transferred to RIMS Mortuary around 3 am on Sunday. A post mortem with video recording was conducted. However, the body is still kept at RIMS Mortuary. Injury caused by a sharp weapon was found on body.

It has been further revealed that after killing Priyobrata, James and his wife returned to Imphal and sold off the van on December 31.

James’s wife, Khoirom ningol Heisnam ongbi Sandhyarani, 33, daughter of Kh Nabakumar from Uripok Ahanthem Leikai also surrendered to the police at Women Police Station, Senapati district.  

According to the police, they have found certain evidence that James was also involved in supplying betel leaves from Imphal to a UG group in Dimapur.
