Manipur University registrar W Chandbabu on Monday stated that it was useless to pursue higher degrees in education if the concept of giving back to the community was absent.

“Instead of pursuing degrees for personal achievements, we should strive to uplift the downtrodden sections of society,” he said.

He was speaking at the certificate distribution ceremony organised by the Department of Adult Continuing Education and Extension, Manipur University for adult learners from KP College Relief Camp, Hiyangthang Kabui Khul and Tarahei Konjil at the department’s lecture hall.

The registrar stated that teaching adults who are illiterate to read and write was a valiant effort which would contribute tremendously to growth of the society.

“There is a distinct difference between Adult Education and other departments. While students of other departments pursue an individual objective, it is part and parcel of adult education to make others literate,” he said.

He stated that it was not an easy task to instill another with the ability to read and write.

“But this does not mean we should look down on those who cannot read nor write. There are other skills and knowledge in which several people excel and this can also be used to better the society,” he said.

Meanwhile, head of Adult Continuing Education and Extension Lamalu Thaimei exhorted adults not to be disheartened if they cannot read nor write.

It is never too late to acquire these skills, she added.

She further stated that teachers and students of the department would continue to do their bit in educating adults in the state.

Director of Centre for Myanmar Studies, MU MC Arunkumar; assistant professor of Adult Continuing Education and Extension Chanam Sonia, guest lecturers Thingbaijam Sharmila and Peichui Vashum among others were also present at the event.
