Unclaimed body in Churachandpur disposed of

The body of a woman with dismembered limbs was found in a drain at IB Road, opposite Lamka Central High School in Churachandpur district around 7 am on May 27.

The Additional District Magistrate of Churachandpur district Seiminthang Lenthang on Tuesday issued an order directing the disposal of the unidentified and unclaimed body of a woman which was found from the drainage at IB Road, Churachandpur District earlier on May 27.

The post mortem over the body was conducted on June 20 by the Forensic Medical Team, JNIMS, Imphal, observing all necessary formalities, stated the order issued by Additional District Magistrate of Churachandpur.

It stated that the officer-in-charge, Women Police Station, Churachandpur had made wide publicity in local dailies, in social media, and WT message was also sent to all OCs of Police Stations in Manipur, for identification and claiming of the body.

Despite all these efforts, the identity of the deceased remains unknown and till date, no claimant has come forward to claim the body, it mentioned.

The body was kept at the District Hospital Morgue, Churachandpur and started decomposing thereby causing health hazard and public nuisance in the campus and the nearby locality, it stated.

The order directed the officer-in-charge, Women Police Station, Churachandpur District to dispose of the unidentified and unclaimed body at an appropriate time and date as per extant rules and procedures.

It is preferred that the last rite of the dead body shall be performed as per her religion (if established) in a proper and dignified manner, it mentioned.

It also mentioned that a police report (Memo No. 52/WPS-CCP/2024/1173 dated June 25 was laid before the Additional District Magistrate of Churachandpur by the officer-in-charge, Women Police Station, Churachandpur District, Manipur in connection with UD Case No. 02/WPS-CCP/2024 u/s 174 Cr. P.C. dated May 27,  regarding disposal of the unclaimed body which was recovered from the drainage at IB Road, Churachandpur District, Manipur.

The body was deposited at the Morgue of District Hospital, Churachandpur on May 27, it added.

It may be recalled that the body of a woman with dismembered limbs was found in a drain at IB Road, opposite Lamka Central High School in Churachandpur district around 7 am on May 27.  

The body was found with many of her limbs like the nose and ears missing, making it hard to identify the corpse which was suspected to have been dumped during the night.
