A special team of CDO-Kakching arrested two individuals on extortion charges from Chandel district on Saturday.
According to a Police statement, the two arrested individuals have been identified as Thangboi Haokip also known as TL Jacob Thadou, 46, son of (Late) Seijamang Haokip, and Anthony Khammailen Mate, 20, son of Timothy Khangin Mate, both residents of Phaijang Village, Chakpikarong, Chandel district.
The duo was arrested in connection with an FIR at Sugnu Police Station in connection with a report that states that at around 8:45 pm Friday, Thangboi Haokip along with Khammailen Mate armed with firearms were loitering with an intention to extort in and around K Molnom Village area, and physically assaulted some of the villagers of the area with an attempt to murder, police said in a statement.
Following a search of the residence of Thangboi Haokip on Saturday, the police seized one AK-47 rifle with three magazines and 40 live rounds; one 12 bore pump action gun bearing number 18PGN -02518, RFI-IN-2018 and four live rounds; one Vivo mobile handset; two seals marked as “Chief/ Chairman Phaijang Village Authority, CKG-Block, Chandel district, Manipur” and “Secretary Phaijang Village Authority CKG-Block, Chandel district, Manipur;” and a Hyundai Creta car bearing registration number MN04P-1849.
Further enquiry revealed that Thangboi Haokip Thadou has been extorting, threatening and harassing villagers of K Molnom and Serou Lamkhai amongst others. He is further listed as TL Jacob Thadou, organising secretary UKLF/UPF (SoO group) and convener, UPF, the police added.
