Two Manipuri ponies, two cattle electrocuted in Imphal East

As per sources, the ponies belonged to Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club and the cattle belonged to a person from Nongpok Sanjenbam, Imphal East.

Two Manipuri ponies and two cattle died due to electrocution at Yaralpat near Mega Manipur School, Imphal East on Friday.

The incident occurred amid the challenges posed in conserving and controlling the population of Manipur Pony that has been reportedly declining in the last few months.

One eyewitness reported that the incident occurred at around 8 am on Friday. As per sources, the ponies belonged to Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club and the cattle belonged to a person from Nongpok Sanjenbam, Imphal East.

The animals were electrocuted by a naked wire as they were grazing in a field, sources said.

The dead animals were later recovered by Chingkhei Hunba Polo Club and owner of the cattle at around 11 am of the same day.

The owners have submitted an application to the Electricity department and appealed to compensate for the animals.

In the past few years, Manipuri ponies have been seen roaming on the streets, and found eating garbage at market areas. Deaths of Manipuri ponies at several places of the Imphal city have been reported frequently in the last few months.
