Two jawans of the 3rd India Reserve Battalion (IRB) from Manipur were killed and two others injured in a firing incident in poll-bound Gujarat's Porbandar district on Saturday evening, according to sources.
According to the control in-charge, Police Control Room, Porbandar, Gujarat, as per brief details from Deputy Commandant of 3rd IRB, Lawrence K Munlou, the deceased was identified as Havildar Th Thoiba Singh, 3rd IRB, Manipur SAP-1445, and Rifleman Kh Jitendra Singh, 3rd IRB, Manipur, SAP-1445.
The injured jawans were identified as Constable of 3rd IRB, Manipur SAP-1445, Chourajit and Constable of 4th IRB, Rohitkanta.
The jawans, who were sent by the Election Commission ahead of Gujarat Assembly Elections, were staying inside a cyclone centre in Tukda Gosa village, located at a distance of about 25 km from Porbandar, Gujarat, as per the police report. It mentioned that the injured are undergoing treatment at Bhavshinhji General Hospital, Porbandar, Gujarat.
As per the details given by Lawrence, one jawan of the company, identified as rifleman constable S Inaucha Singh allegedly opened fire at the other police staff with his service AK-47 rifle, at around 7 pm Saturday, killing two on the spot and injuring another two.
Further investigation is underway, the Gujarat Police added, while sources reported that the bodies are yet to be transported to Manipur.
Polling in Porbandar district for the Gujarat state assembly election will be held in two phases. The first phase will be held on December 1 while the second phase will be held on December 5. The results will be declared on December 8.
