Tobacco items gateway to drugs abuse: Manipur Social Welfare director

Ng Uttam urged all to stop the habit of sharing tobacco items especially among one’s own family members.

Manipur Social Welfare director Ng Uttam on Tuesday said that tobacco items such as paan, cigarette etc. are the gateway to drug abuse and urged to stop the habit of sharing tobacco items especially among one’s own family members.

He was speaking at the 14th foundation day celebration of the All Manipur Muslim Girl Students’ Union (AMMGSU) at Hotel Classic in North AOC, Imphal.

He raised concern on giving importance solely on earning and making money without taking care of one's health during younger days. Although making a livelihood is essential, one should not forget to take care of his or her health at the same time, he added.

“Only when there is a good and healthy lifestyle, the issue of drug menace in the state can be tackled successfully,” he added.   

AMMGSU advisor Ruskshar Choudhury in his speech pointed out that the women in the society are not getting their equal rights with men till date.

He claimed that the practice of dowry system in the Manipur society where women have to focus on earning for dowry while men only focus on education, jobs and passions as an example.

Moreover, there are cases of many hideous crimes committed to the women by in-laws, relatives and even by their father apart from strangers, he added.

To fight such crimes against women and to empower them in society, AMMGSU will always remain at the frontline, he mentioned.

He further pointed out that the introduction of smart phones to young kids to conduct online classes can cause adverse effects. He further stressed on the need for introducing a policy for online classes in order to protect the kids from those negative influences.

The function was also attended by Adhyaksha of Thoubal ZP Hasina Begum; Up-Adhyaksha of Imphal West ZP L Bobby; CEO of Waqf Board Mohd Yaseer Ahamed Khan among others.
