Three Myanmar nationals escape from jail in Churachandpur

The three Myanmar nationals, including a minor, reportedly escaped from a temporary jail at Shavdan Mandap, Khominthang, New Lamka in Churachandpur on Sunday.

Three Myanmar nationals, including a minor, have reportedly escaped from a temporary jail at Shavdan Mandap, Khominthang, New Lamka in Churachandpur on Sunday morning. Sources said they were found missing at 8 am on Sunday.

The escapees have been identified as Winmintay, 28, son of Tharcha from Myanmar; Win Naing Thon, 27, from Myanmar and Biaka,17, son of Usawelh from Myanmar A/P Kawnpui.

Winmintay and Win Naing Thon were admitted on April 7, 2021 while Biaka was admitted on March 29, 2021, as per sources.

According to the Home Department, there are 45 inmates, including nine children in the temporary jail. Of this, two women have died.

Churachandpur SP informed the Imphal Free Press that the district launched a manhunt to nab the escaped inmates.

According to sources, most of the inmates were arrested after they entered Manipur illegally following the Myanmar coup in 2021. It was also at the height of the global COVID pandemic.

Manipur Police in June last arrested around 80 Myanmar nationals, including women and children, who were illegally staying in the Churachandpur district.

The Myanmar nationals were reportedly apprehended from different places during a massive operation launched early. Those arrested include 25 men, 35 women and 20 minors.

A local court remanded the 60 adults to police custody for seven days while the minors were sent to a juvenile observation home, according to the police.
