Three injured in post-poll violence, 144 CrPC imposed in Jiribam district

JDU workers allegedly assaulted the family members of Sadam, vice president of Imphal West BJP Minority Morcha, on Friday morning.

In what could be termed as post-poll violence, some Janata Dal United workers allegedly assaulted the family members of Sadam, the vice president of Imphal West BJP Minority Morcha, on Friday morning.
It is reported that the incident occurred around 8.30 am at the residence of Sadam, Lalpani Part 2 in Jiribam district.

Some of the JD(U) workers allegedly came to the residence of Sadam and assaulted his family members including father, mother and his wife. They also threatened them for supporting the BJP.

Those injured, identified as, Md Makram Ali, 58, father of Sadam, his mother Angurun Nessa, 52, his wife Abeda Begum, 30 and his uncle Kamrul Islam, 38, are undergoing treatment at Jiri Hospital located at Uchathol, Jiribam district.

Sadam told the media that on Friday at about 8.30 AM, some of the supporters of JD(U) candidate, Achab Uddin, came and hurled crackers at his residence. When his mother told them not to hurl the crackers, the JD(U) supporters allegedly came inside and assaulted his family members, even threatening them with life, he added.

He said when he reported the incident to Jiribam police station, the police personnel failed to turn up in time. Sadam asked if there is any harm in voting for BJP and stated that it is a democratic right to support and vote for sany candidate. He appealed to the authorities concerned to take necessary steps as the family members are living in a panicky situation.

Receiving the news of the incident some of the women folks stormed the residence of one Moirangthem Promen located at Dibong. A team of Jiribam police rushed to the spot however confrontation took place between the police personnel and women. The tense mob destroyed one shop named as “VIRGO Arts” owned by Promen and one motorcycle was set on fire.

Later the police managed to control the mob.

Meanwhile, as precautionary measures and to maintain peace to avoid unwanted incidents, District Magistrate, Jiribam district, W Malemnganba Chenglei has issued a prohibitory order under section 144 (1) of CrPC 1973 with immediate effect from 4:00 PM of Friday indefinitely.

In the order it is mentioned that the restriction will be effective in the entire Jiribam district but that essential service, enforcement agents of law and order, commercial passenger vehicles along National highway 37, media personnel and curfew permit holders will be exempted from the restriction.
