Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a woman, whose body was found on Monday at a river bank near Thambal Academy English School at Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai Konjil under Lilong Police Station in Thoubal district.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam said that one of the three arrested is directly involved in the alleged murder of one Korimayum Nargish, 21, daughter of Ahmed Ali from Lilong Haoreibi Makha leikai Salam Manung.

The arrested persons have been identified as Chesam Sirajur Rahman, 27, son of Siraj Ahmed of Lilong Haoreibi Makha leikai; his younger sister Chesam Mastura, 23, and younger brother Chesam Musa, 21.

The arrested persons were produced before CJM Thoubal on Tuesday and remanded to eight days police custody for smooth investigation into the case.

The arrested persons were produced before the media in a press conference held at the office of Thoubal SP.

SP Jogeshchandra further said that Nargish went missing at around 9.30 pm of December 22 as per the complaint lodged by her father at Lilong Police Station in the morning of December 23.

After receiving the complaint, the police had launched an investigation. Meanwhile, her body was found in a suspicious manner at a river bank, he said. The police registered a case under IPC section 302/376/34 in connection with the death and an investigation was launched, he added.

The accused persons were identified on Monday and they were arrested today, he added. He further said that the accused Sirajur has admitted to killing Nargish.

Appealing to the public cooperation in the investigation, he assured that the Police will take up appropriate steps against the accused persons under law, and urged the public not to indulge in mob violence.

In the meantime, sources said that it will be confirmed whether or not Nargish was raped by Sirajur only after the Forensic Science team provides a report.

The younger brother and sister of Sirajur were arrested on charges of trying to hide the crime despite having knowledge of it.

Meanwhile, convenor of the JAC that was formed in connection with the death, Arshad Ali told the media that the JAC lauds the CM, Lilong assembly constituency MLA, DGP of the Police department concerned, SP etc., for the quick action in arresting the culprits behind the crime. Raising suspicions that others might be involved in the murder, he further appealed to arrest the remaining culprits.

It is also reported that the home of Sirajur has been vandalised and torched by an enraged mob in the morning today.
