The second foundation day of Thoubal District Hawkers Association (TDHA) was solemnly celebrated at the residence of one Ahongsanbam Ratan at Athokpam Khunou in Thoubal district on Sunday.

The event was attended by president of Thoubal District Working Journalists Union (TDWJU) Soibam Binoi as the chief guest, president of Thoubal District Hawkers Association (TDHA) Samom Raghumani as president and TDHA advisor Soibam Loken as the guest of honour.

Samom Raghumani who had been working as a newspaper hawker for more than 20 years highlighted the issues being faced by the hawkers and the impact of circulating newspaper PDFs on social media.

He said that TDHA was founded on May 8, 2020. Since it was founded, the association had been working for the welfare of hawkers in Thoubal district. It took a major role in ensuring that newspapers are delivered to the subscribers despite the challenges and dangers posed by the pandemic.

He further said that it has been two years since the association was founded and announced that the celebration for the 3rd foundation day in the next year will be carried out in a grand scale.

Raghumani further said that all jobs are equal and discriminations should not exist among different forms of employment. He further urged respect for all forms of employment and stressed on the need to co-exist by helping one another.

“If one cannot find satisfaction in one’s job, then it would not be possible to become successful in that career. Having the quality of appreciating or respecting one’s job depends on the character and outlook of that person doing the job,” he said.

"Sincerity and honesty are absolute necessities for every form of work. If a person serves the public with honesty and a clear conscience, then he or she will also be blessed by God and respected by the people as well."

Raghumani further pointed out that hawkers have to buy the newspapers daily from the press while the bills are collected on a monthly basis from the subscribers. If the subscribers do not timely pay their monthly bills or keep the payment on due for 2-3 months, then the hawkers have no other sources or means to manage the dues, he said and urged the subscribers to pay their bills on a timely manner.

He further drew public attention on the plights of the hawkers while keeping in consideration that the price of daily requirements and commodities has skyrocketed. Hawkers deserve to be given utmost respect for working without ever taking a break be it rain or shine, amid bandhs and blockades etc., he maintained.

He further urged on halting the illegal circulation of newspapers on Social media by taking photos of the printed news and turning them into PDFs. He drew the attention of the authorities concerned in this regard.

Soibam Binoy Singh said that the trend of cutting out published news and circulating their photos along with illegal circulation of PDFs have delivered a huge blow in the lives of hawkers who are the sole breadwinners of the family as well as the media houses.

He further said that although media houses have refrained from uploading or posting the PDFs before 12 pm, miscreants are taking photos of the prints in an authorised manner and turning them into PDFS and further circulating their cut outs on various social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube etc. Such trends are illegal and wrong, and they must be halted with concerted efforts while there is still time, he said.

He also raised concern on the decline of reading newspapers in the morning, with local TV news gaining more popularity, and further urged the public to be wary of the ill effects of social media among youths.

It may be mentioned that the occasion was attended by many distributors and hawkers working in the district.
