Thoubal DEO declares polling stations as 'No Smoking and Tobacco Free Zones'

The DEO directed the SP of Thoubal and Kakching to take necessary action against violators by imposing fine and penalty.

The district election officer of Thoubal has declared all public places including polling stations as "No Smoking and Tobacco Free Zones", following the order by the chief election officer, Manipur to make all electoral booths of the upcoming 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election Tobacco free by implementing COTPA, 2003.

In its order issued on Friday, the DEO stated that section 4 of "The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and distribution) act, 2003 or COPTA will be enforced, prohibiting smoking in public places in Thoubal and Kakching districts.

The DEO directed the SP of Thoubal and Kakching to take necessary action against violators by imposing fine and penalty.

It also directed the polling teams to put up "No Smoking Area" on polling stations.
