A potentially catastrophic train accident was averted in Noney district, Manipur on Tuesday, thanks to the swift actions of the Territorial Army (TA) which has been deployed along the railway lines.
A goods train consisting of 21 wagons of rice, was en-route to Khongsang, Noney district, Manipur when excessive rainfall in the early hours of Tuesday washed away the ballast which consist of gravel or crushed stones that supports the tracks, as per sources.
The damaged track is located between T-14 P2 and T-15 P1, sources. The damage posed a significant risk of track instability and misalignment. A Territorial Army patrol deployed along the Jiribam to Khongsang railway line identified the track damage and promptly alerted authorities about the impending danger.
The Railway authorities were immediately informed, and the incoming goods train was physically stopped at Kambiron in Noney district by the Army personnel. The timely intervention by the Territorial Army prevented what could have been a major train accident.
The Territorial Army is deployed along this stretch of the railway line to provide security for the under-construction mega railway project linking Jiribam to Imphal.
