The Thadou Community International (TCI) on Wednesday alleged the Churachandpur police of being unable to apprehend the perpetrators involved in the arson attack on Michael Lamjathang Haokip’s residence on August 31 and previous attacks, raising serious concerns on the situation.

Even after 10 days,  the police have failed to make significant progress in the investigation, leaving the community questioning their commitment to their duties and justice, stated a release. The brazen daylight attacks have left the community shaken and fearful for their safety, it stated.

TCI demanded that the case be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to ensure a fair, impartial, and speedy investigation and justice, if the Churachandpur police are unable to take effective actions.

Michael Lamjathang Haokip, a respected leader of the Thadou community and a vocal advocate for peace and harmony, was clearly targeted to silence his voice as well as the voice of many other peace-seeking people and to intimidate the Thadou community, it stated.

Repeated violent and lethal attacks against Michael and other Thadou leaders in the past with no actions against the perpetrators have only emboldened criminals and terrorists to carry on their criminal and terror activities, it stated.

The fact that authorities have not yet been able to bring perpetrators to book causes suspicion of the possible involvement of powerful players, it alleged.

If at all there is still a rule of law and the area is an integral part of India where the Indian constitution and established laws apply, then the relevant government authorities must enforce the laws in nabbing the culprits and bring them to justice without any further delay, TCI stated.

The lack of interest and urgent action by the police is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about their commitment to justice and public safety, it stated.

It demanded the Churachandpur police to identify and apprehend the perpetrators involved in the arson attack and the masterminds. It further urged the same to conduct a thorough investigation into the incidents and  provide adequate security measures to protect the community from future attacks.

“We urge the authorities to take this matter seriously and ensure justice is served promptly. The victims deserve justice and closure, and it is the duty of the police to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. The failure to do so erodes trust in the authorities and perpetuates a culture of impunity. The community will not rest until there is justice on this matter,” it added.
