In a landmark development, a new commercial outlet tagged ‘Tangkhul Beads’ which specialises in traditional Tangkhul ornaments, was inaugurated at Phungreitang in the commercial heart of Ukhrul town, Manipur on Tuesday.
The outlet was inaugurated by the deputy commissioner of Ukhrul, Kengoo Zuringla, in the presence of UTBC pastor Reverend Somi Kasomwoshi; Valleyrose Hungyo, former Aja Daily news editor; Yaruihor Hungyo, Tangkhul Leisak Long president; Ramyo Raingam, general secretary, Ngathingpam Ronrei, promoter Ngaraipam and Katho Katamnao Long (KTL) president, Mashungmi Zingkhai, among others.
Zuringla, the deputy commissioner, Ukhrul, emphasised the need to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the Tangkhul community, in particular, her rich ornaments which is considered a treasure trove for the community.
The Tangkhuls are known for their diverse range of jewelry items available which not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also strengthens a sense of identity and connection to their traditions.
“Each item has its own uniqueness. The piece I wore today has its own symbolic story and significance. It has inner value or meaning to it,” Kengoo emphasised.
Embracing these items made us revisit our past and rediscovered the values held by our ancestors when they adorned themselves with these beads, the DC said.
Commenting specifically on the evolution of these items, Kengoo said, “Now we see that they embody not just traditional aesthetics but also have a modern touch.”
She further said that the ornaments extend beyond mere beads strung around the neck, which was a normal practice. However, today the ornaments adorn the various parts of the body, enhancing our overall attire. “It’s a refreshing innovation and I truly appreciate this development,” she remarked.
‘Tangkhul Beads’ is owned by designers Pamchuiwon Kasak, Mashunphu Kasak and Soreila Awungshi.
To their credits they had handcrafted scorsea zeest of Tangkhul traditional ornaments including Kongsang (necklaces, headgears), Kazao (bangles) Zeithing, earrings, crowns, and other traditional accessories, among others.
