Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday said that the report about a person staying in relief camp committing suicide had been blown out of proportion.

“The issue is an isolated incident. On top of that, the victim had a history of alcoholism before the incident,” he said.

He was answering media queries on the sidelines of the event for distribution of benefits under various government schemes and launch of new schemes and programmes at City Convention, Imphal.

CM Biren further maintained that the incident had no bearing on his mental condition in the relief camp and that it was the result of his individual problems.

On the occasion, CM Biren highlighted that the ongoing unprecedented conflict and the series of natural calamities in the state had seriously hindered the developmental activities in the state.

He also stated that the government would provide all necessary assistance for the welfare of the people during these trying times.

Good quality CGI sheets have been distributed to the people affected by the recent hailstorm through the respective deputy commissioners of the affected region, he added.

He exuded confidence that the territorial integrity of the state shall remain intact and that external aggression would not be able to sabotage the territorial integrity of Manipur.

“The displaced people staying in relief camps are the true heroes. Please do not lose heart and grit. Works are underway to provide permanent housing and relocate the displaced people back to their original homes,” he said.

He stated that the world was bearing witness to the truth that was unfolding in Manipur and added that it won’t be long before everything fell back into its original state.

He further informed that medical teams had been formed to help people staying in relief camps.
The teams consisted of doctors, nurses and multitasking staff, he added.

He highlighted that the 68 teams at present were visiting around 238 relief camps twice a week for health check-ups.

He also noted that mental health counselling facilities had also been provided and till date around 1,436 free medical check-ups had been conducted.
