The Socialist Students’ Union of Manipur (SSUM) on Friday called for the replacement of T Geetchandra Sharma, the newly appointed Secretary of BOSEM, who also holds the position of additional director in the Planning and Education (S) Department.
During a press conference held at their Imphal office, SSUM general secretary Thiyam Bikash Luwang expressed concerns over Geetchandra’s dual role, questioning his capability to effectively manage both responsibilities simultaneously.
He emphasised that the Secretary’s role at BOSEM involves handling highly confidential matters aligned with specific programs and policies, crucial for maintaining the board’s operational integrity.
Holding dual positions, he argued, could create an unhealthy atmosphere within the board and compromise public administration and academic processes.
“The Secretary is the backbone of BOSEM,” Luwang stated, highlighting the importance of appointing a neutral candidate solely dedicated to BOSEM’s responsibilities, in accordance with relevant recruitment rules and legal norms.
The SSUM had previously submitted a memorandum to the government on this matter but cited governmental inaction as necessitating their current public stance, he said.
The student body urged the government to appoint a distinguished academician with proven leadership in academic administration, emphasising ethical conduct and dedication to advancing education in Manipur.
They called for the appointment to be finalised before the upcoming Assembly session to ensure effective implementation of educational schemes for the state’s benefit.
