Demanding to send recommendations for the inclusion of Meetei/Meitei community in the scheduled tribe list, the Schedule Tribe Demand Committee (STDCM) along with women vendors of Singjamei market and locals staged a one-day sit-in protest at Singjamei Market on Friday.

The protest was scheduled earlier on Thursday at the same spot but got cancelled.

Concerning the cancelling of the protest and rescheduling on Friday, STDCM secretary K Bogendrajit Singh told the Imphal Free Press that chief minister N Biren Singh, for attending a one-day political conference, happened to be passing through Singjamei market where the protest was planned to be held, and due to imposing of CrPC 144 in Imphal West district, police dispersed them before the protest could be started.

He further said the state government should send recommendations to the Central government for inclusion of the Meetei/Meitei community in the scheduled tribe list before the coming State Legislative Assembly election, 2022.
