The National Conference and Workshop, BLODCON 2024, jointly organised by the Federation of Indian Blood Donors Organisations (FIBDO) and the National Institute of Biologicals (NIB) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, concluded on Saturday at the NIB in Noida.

The conference brought together representatives from various states across India, focusing on critical issues in blood donation and transfusion services.

Moirangthem Premijit Singh, president of Helping Hands for People, Manipur, represented the state and successfully presented five key demands aimed at addressing the challenges faced during blood donation in Manipur.

These demands received approval from both FIBDO and Krishna Kumar, Director of National Blood Transmission.

Among the three representatives from Manipur were Takhellambam Khamba, executive member of Helping Hands, and Sarangthem Kumarjit Singh, secretary of the Association of Voluntary Blood Donors, Manipur.

During the workshop, Premijit Singh raised significant concerns regarding the disparity in benefits for patients requiring blood transfusions.

He pointed out that while other states offer 100 per cent coverage for patients, Manipur currently provides only 30 per cent, leaving the remaining 70 per cent as out-of-pocket expenses for patients.

He emphasised the urgent need for the State Blood Transmission Council to address this critical issue and called for the appointment of a dedicated Director to manage blood donation processes effectively.

Furthermore, he highlighted that only 10 per cent of blood donations in Manipur come from the hill regions, while a significant 90 per cent is sourced from the valley regions, pointing to an imbalance that needs attention.
