The Singjamei Apunba Nupi Lup held a sit-in-protest on Saturday against gun culture in Manipur at Singjamei Thongam Leikai demanding to review issued licensed guns.
Speaking to the media, Singjamei Apunba Nupi Lup publicity secretary Sougrakpam Sumati said that gun culture in Manipur is not reducing. There were incidents of killing women using licensed guns. And even police personnel shot a woman with his licensed gun. If it continues then there will be no place for women to roam freely or go anywhere, she said.
Moreover, the state government should give importance with regards to the functioning of the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) as crime or incidents of violating rights is not stopping. There is no place to approach for violation of rights, she said.
While giving licensed guns, the state government or authorities should check the mental health conditions and have a routine mental health check-up for personnel to prevent unnecessary use of licensed guns, Sumati said.
She drew the attention of the state government to review the issuance of licensed guns and take up the matter to review at the upcoming assembly to be held in February.
