The body of sub-inspector Md Shah Jahan, allegedly killed by a fellow constable, was retrieved from the JNIMS morgue after an agreement was reached between the JAC and CM Biren Singh on Monday.
The last rites were performed on Monday night in Jahan’s hometown, Yairipok, with full honours, including a guard of honor by the Manipur Police, according to the JAC.
The fateful incident took place on October 2 in Mongbung village under Jiribam district, where constable Akoijam Bikram allegedly used his service rifle to fatally shoot his senior colleague, SI Jahan, around 11 am.
The motive remains unclear, leaving the community and police force shocked and in mourning as investigations continue.
Speaking on behalf of the JAC, convenor Makakmayum Fayasafar stated that the body was collected only after the chief minister assured that the committee’s demands would be met.
The demands include the immediate dismissal of constable Bikram, filing of formal charges within two months, a government job for the deceased’s wife, ex-gratia support, and continued salary for Jahan’s family.
Fayasafar extended gratitude to civil society groups and the public for their support in pursuing justice.
Meanwhile, the Office of the SP Jiribam had announced the suspension of constable Akoijam Bikram. Effective immediately, he is placed on suspension pending further investigation.
He is currently stationed at Reserve Lines, Jiribam District Police, and must seek permission before leaving his headquarters. During this period, he will receive a subsistence allowance as per department regulations.
Further proceedings are anticipated as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
