Addressing the media at the Manipur Press Club on Monday, JAC convener Sagolsem Shyam said that a 15-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in April but it came to light only in November. The minor girl was taunted by her lover (accused) in social media with "awkward words", he said. The accused, Thangjam Malemganba @ Tomba, 22, son of Thangjam Kameshwor of Tiger Camp, Imphal East had sexually assaulted the minor with the false promise of marrying her, the convener said.

When words started spreading in social media, the family visited the minor girl’s family and asked for taking the minor as a wife of the accused, Shyam said. But, when the family of the victim asked for performing the simple ritual ceremony, the accused family denied and refused to take the minor. The incident took place on November 23 and following this incident, the family of the victim lodged an FIR at Porompat Women Police Station, the convener added.

The FIR has been lodged against the accused under section 4 of POCSO Act, penetrative sexual assault, but the IO of the case is yet to arrest the accused, said Shyam while alleging that the accused is still active on Facebook and other social media platforms. But, the IO of the case responded that the accused phone is off, Shyam said.
