Seven kg opium seized, two arrested in Imphal West

A team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border seized seven kilogram of opium and arrested two drug peddlers from Mantripukhri, Imphal West near a bus stand at around 4 pm on Friday.

Police said the arrested persons are identified as one AS Thanreimung, 21, son of AS Mahai, resident of Khamason, Ukhrul District, Manipur and AS Nathan, 30, son of late AS Khawung, resident of Ukhrul, Ukhrul District.

As a part of the continuous drive conducted against illicit trafficking of drugs, the NAB team conducted frisking and checking at Mantripukhri area.

During the NAB activity, seven kg of opium was seized from the two arrested persons. Two mobile handsets were also seized from their possession.

A case has been registered at NAB police station for further investigation.

During preliminary verification, they both revealed that they are into poppy cultivation in nearby hills. They bought the seized opium to Imphal to be sold in Mantripukhri area.

Further verification is being carried out to establish other links, police added.

On Thursday, two women drug peddlers were arrested, while one kg of opium was seized from their possession at Churachandpur Mandop Leikai, Churachandpur district by Narcotic Cell, Imphal East at around 3.15 pm.

The arrested women were identified as one Hoinu Zou, 27, wife of Minthang Zou alias Thangboi Zou and Ngailun Zou, 27, wife of Ashong Kom. Both are from Manyang Veng, Churachandpur district.

The arrested persons along with the seized items have been handed over to Churachandpur district police for further necessary legal action, police said.

Meanwhile, the narcotics cell seized a total of 166 grams of heroin powder and arrested two drug peddlers in two separate incidents on Saturday.

The arrested persons have been identified as one Vareithing Kasom, 32, son of Ngadangmi Kasom of Lamkang Centre, Chandel district and Md Altaf, 19, son of Md Asta Ali of Santhel Mayai Leikai, Kakching district.

Acting on tip-off, the narcotic team led by its officer-in-charge, inspector Kh Devkumar Singh assisted by sub-inspector T Lenin Singh and Ng Debeshwar Singh along with an executive magistrate, SDC N Ratankumar Singh seized four soap cases containing heroin powder weighing around 103 grams from the possession of Vareithing at Kyamgei Pal Ahanbi Thong eastern side.

On the same day, another team led by assistant sub-inspector Md Tamijur Rahman along with the volunteers of Young Athletic Development Association (YADA) detected three soap cases and 94 vials of heroin weighing around 63 grams from the possession of Altaf. The items were seized and he was arrested on the spot by the same police team.

The seized items along with the arrested persons have been handed over to Irilbung police station for further necessary legal action.
