D Korungthang, Congress MLA from Tengnoupal assembly constituency in Manipur on Tuesday resigned as member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly (MLA) ahead of the state assembly polls.
K Meghajit, secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly, issued a bulletin on Tuesday, stating that following the resignation of Korunthang, the 42 Tengnoupal Assembly seat has been declared vacant.
The state assembly election will be held soon and the state is waiting for a formal declaration of poll by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
Korungthang is yet to announce which party he will join, but it is highly expected that he will join the Naga People’s Front (NPF) which is in coalition with the BJP government in the state.
Interestingly, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip of the National People’s Party (NPP), also in coalition with the ruling BJP, joined the BJP on December 29, 2021 in New Delhi and is eying to contest the ensuing election from Tengnoupal district. Letpao was elected from Chandel 41/AC in the last election.
Later, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president N Loken during a press conference announced that D Korungthang has been suspended from the Congress party with immediate effect for alleged anti-party activities and breach of discipline.
Loken said that MPCC came across a resignation letter of Korungthang submitted to speaker Y Khemchand on Monday as it was being circulated in social media. His resignation was against the rules and regulations of the party constitution and for the Act, MPCC decided to suspend him, he added.
Korungthang was elected from Tengnoupal assembly constituency in 2017 with an Indian National Congress ticket.
