Security beefed up ahead of Republic Day; arms, ammunition seized in Bishnupur, Churachandpur

As a preventive measure taken up for the forthcoming Republic Day celebration and the state general election 2022, security forces conducted an extensive search operation in Bishnupur district.

As a part of the preventive security measures taken up ahead of the forthcoming Republic Day celebration and the state general election 2022, security forces seized several arms and ammunition in separate incidents in Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts in Manipur.

In Bishnupur district, a combined team of Bishnupur Police and 36 Assam Rifles on Tuesday seized arms and ammunition during a search operation conducted between Chinglangmei village and Khojumantabi Makha Leikai Ching under Kumbi Police Station in Bishnupur district. The arms and ammunition which was found concealed at Khoijumantabi Makha Leikai Ching, police sources said.

The seized arms included one M-16 rifle made in USA; one SLR (regd no. mark as 15300477); one 7.62 modified rifle; one Chinese hand grenade; one I-COM set (IC-V87) along with set charger; one 5.56 M-16 magazine; two 7.62 magazine; four 5.56 M-16 ammunition; eight 7.62 SLR ammunition; three 7.62 AK ammunition, it mentioned.

The seizure was carried out based on a tip-off about the presence of suspected hideout of UG cadres at Khoijumantabi Makha Leikai Ching and Napat area, police said, adding the combined team conducted an extensive search operation in the said area.

The combined team of Bishnupur commando and a column of 36 AR under the supervision of additional SP (Ops) Bishnupur Roni Mayengbam assisted by officer in charge, commando Bishnupur Y Shakti Shen Singh and under the overall guidance of IPS SP Bishnupur N Herojit Meetei, seized the arms and ammunition, which have been handed over to Kumbi Police Station for further necessary action.

One arrested, arms seized in Churachandpur 

Meanwhile, in Churachandpur, a combined team of Churachandpur traffic police and district police seized arms and ammunition and arrested one person during frisking and checking at about 3.35 pm from in front of the Churachandpur police station on Tuesday.

The arrested person has been identified as one Lemsang Singson, 36, son of late Hankhohen Singson of Longkaiphon village, Tamenglong district, presently staying at Tuibong, Churachandpur district, police sources said.

During the frisking and checking by the police, one scooter (Dio, bearing registration number MN02-9541) along with a pillion rider was seen coming from the southern side. When the police team tried to stop the vehicle, it tried to escape from the police team towards the northern side, the sources stated.

When the police tried to intercept the vehicle, the pillion rider jumped from the scooter and escaped by taking advantage of a crowd. However, the police team caught the driver, identified as one Lemsang and he was brought to the police station.

While checking the scooter, the police team detected one white bag, containing a country made carbine; and one SLR magazine containing 19 foreign made ammunition.

Lemsang was arrested on the spot while the arms and ammunition along with the vehicle were seized for further necessary action.
