RTI activist charged in murder case

RTI activist Wahengbam Joykumar Singh has been accused of aiding and abetting the extortion and the crime of killing of one Laishram Rameshwor Singh.

RTI activist Wahengbam Joykumar Singh who was arrested in connection with an FIR of murder case has been charged in the case.

Wahengbam Joykumar Singh is an advocate by profession and human rights defender.  
He was arrested on January 28, 2023 in connection with the FIR and remanded to judicial custody on February 2. He has been in judicial custody till date ever since.

He had filed an application before the Session Judge, Thoubal under Section 227 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1993, praying for discharging him in connection with Session Trial as No. 5 of 2023, FIR No. 17(1) 2023 TBL UIS 307/326/34 IPC and 25(1-B) Arms Act Added 302 IPC.

The FIR case is that on January 24, one Laishram Rameshwor Singh (deceased victim), about 58, son of L Nimai Singh of Thoubal Kshetri Leikai, Thoubal district was shot by unknown persons at Thoubal Kshetri Leikai Ningombam Leirak, Thoubal district.

As a result of which, Laishram Rameshwor Singh sustained a bullet injury on the right side of his chest and was admitted to a Hospital for medical treatment. Later, he succumbed to his injury.

Police arrested two accused in connection with the case, namely Ayekpam Keshorjit and Naorem Ricky Pointing.

From the disclosure of Ayekpam Keshorjit Singh, it was found that after the commission of the crime, the accused person frequently contacted the RTI activist Wahengbam Joykumar Singh.

Joykumar has been accused of aiding and abetting the extortion and the crime of killing Rameshwor. Therefore, police arrested him for criminal conspiracy in the case.

The court after perusing the materials in record and submission of the counsels, stated that the prima facie case of the involvement of the alleged accused in the commission of the offense charged against him in the charge sheet is made out by the prosecution. Hence, the present application to discharge the accused is dismissed as devoid of merit.
