Rs 16.30 crore worth brown sugar seized near India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge

A combined team of Moreh battalion Assam Rifles and Moreh police commando seized 8.150 kg brown sugar which was packed in 195 soap cases.

A combined team of Moreh battalion Assam Rifles and Moreh police commando seized Rs 16.30 crore worth brown sugar near India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge at Moreh in Tengnoupal district Manipur on Tuesday.

Based on a tip off about the transport of drugs by drug dealers in the general area of Indo-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, the combined team of Assam Rifles and Police commando conducted operations in the area, as per sources.

It stated that around 2.15 am of Tuesday, the combined team spotted two individuals with loaded sacks on their backs, crossing the border from the Myanmar side near the Border Pillar No. 77. The two dropped the sacks and fled towards Myanmar territory when the security forces signalled them to halt for checking, it stated.

On thorough search of the area, the combined team found the sacks and seized 8.150 kg brown sugar which was packed in 195 soap cases. The illicit drugs are worth around Rs16,30,00,000 in the international market, sources said.

The seized items have been handed over to Moreh Police station for further necessary legal process, it added.
