RPI-A representative arrested on charges of stealing ballot paper

The ballot paper bearing serial number 0001 of Keishamthong Assembly constituency was cancelled and rejected, and will not be further used in the election.

A man who allegedly stole a ballot paper after attending the opening of the strong room for commissioning EVM and VVPAT at DC office, Imphal West was arrested on charges of theft attempt under section 308 IPC on Thursday.

The arrested person was identified as one H Naresh, a representative of the Republican Party of India (RPI-A), candidate Thounaojam Maheshwar.

Police reported that at around 12.35 pm, he took the ballot paper bearing serial number 0001 and pocketed it after attending the opening of the strong room for commissioning EVM and VVPAT at the DC office, Imphal West. The election staff came to know about the missing ballot paper during the process of the commissioning at 12.50 pm.

The election officials reported the matter to Lamphel police station.  Afterwards, the said ballot paper was seized from the possession of Naresh and he was arrested by a team of Lamphel police.

A release issued by DC, Imphal West Th Kirankumar mentioned that in connection with the Manipur Legislative Assembly 2022 election, commissioning of EVMs and VVPATs for use in Keishamthong assembly constituency took place at Kuranganayani hall of DC office complex, Lamphel from 10.30 am on Thursday.

During the commission Haresh of Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai, a representative of PRI(A) candidate of the same assembly constituency Thounaojam Maheshwar covertly pocketed one ballot paper bearing serial number 0001 that was meant to be used for ballot unit (BU) of the assembly constituency at 12.33 pm.

On finding out that the ballot paper was missing, an enquiry was conducted and the same was verified through CCTV footage. A case has been registered at Lamphel police station in connection with the incident.

It further mentioned that to instill a sense of faith and transparency of procedure on electoral process, the ballot paper bearing serial number 0001 of Keishamthong assembly constituency was cancelled and rejected, and will not be further used in the election.
