The Saitu Gamphazol Area Village Organizations (SGAVO) and Saparmeina Area Village Organisations (SAVO) have imposed a ban on all forms of celebration, including picnics, along the Imphal River from Koubru Laikha to Pangmol village to save the river from plastics and other wastes which cause pollution.
A joint statement issued by the two organisations stated that picnics and celebrations are commonly seen, especially during year-end and new year without maintaining any hygiene and cleanliness on the part of the picnickers.
SGAVO, SAVO, and United Saparmeina Youth Club had spearheaded the campaign of ‘Clean Imphal River’ and already cleaned the river on October 4, 2022 under the campaign, it stated.
However, with the arrival of festive season of the year-end and the new year ahead, people were seen visiting the river for celebrations and picnics which would definitely pollute the river with litter and other waste materials since no hygienic and cleanliness behaviors have ever been maintained, it stated.
All types of picnics and celebrations along the Imphal river from Koubru Laikha to Pangmol village have been banned with the aim to maintain the river clean, safe and free from public nuisance as well as untoward disturbances in the name of year-end and new year celebrations, it added.
