Ringing in Meitei New Year - Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba

Wishes for good health, happiness, prosperity, success, and peace on 'Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba’, which marks the beginning of a new lunar year for the Meitei community.

Yaiskul assembly constituency MLA Th Satyabrata Singh on Monday conveyed well wishes to the people of Manipur on the occasion of ‘Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba’, which marks the beginning of a new lunar year for the Meitei community. This year, the new year day on the Meitei lunar calendar falls on March 22.

In his message, Satyabrata Singh stated that the celebration began during the reign of King Maliya Fambalcha (1359 BC -1329) who started the Meitei Calendar when he ascended the throne at the age of 25.

The day is observed with piousness and serenity both at physical and mental levels along with the preparation of traditional cuisines and the offering of rituals to the lord or guardian of the land, he added.

Meanwhile, the Manipur People’s Party MPP also extended their greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of Cheiraoba. "May the festival fill people's lives with good health, happiness, prosperity, success, and peace," it said in a release.
