Review meeting for Enforcement Squad under National Tobacco Control Programme held

More than 50 per cent of the people in Manipur are tobacco users according to a survey by Global Adult Tobacco Survey.

The District Health Society, Thoubal organised a one-day orientation cum review meeting for Enforcement Squad under National Tobacco Control Programme at the conference hall of CMO office complex, Thoubal on Tuesday.

The programme was attended by SDPO of Thoubal, H Johny Sharma as chief guest, chief medical officer of Thoubal, N Jayanta Kumar as president and food safety officer of Thoubal, Athokpam Brojendro as guest of honour.

In the meeting, district nodal officer of NTCP, Thoubal, Dr Khumukcham Trusty spoke on how to implement the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Act (COTPA), 2003 and the need of tobacco free society. She also mentioned that more than 50 per cent of the people in Manipur are tobacco users according to a survey by Global Adult Tobacco Survey.

H Johny Sharma said that the COTPA will be implemented in the district soon while N Jayanta Kumar stressed on the health hazards of tobacco and its products. Athokpam Brojendro explained the difference of the rules for seizing tobacco as per Food Safety Act from COTPA.

The meeting was conducted by maintaining strict SOPS for COVID 19 laid down by the government.
