Return Manipur’s lost lands: MDA, Shiv Sena to Centre

The Manipur Democratic Alliance (MDA) and Shiv Sena-State Unit demanded the Central and state government to return Manipur’s lands, including Kabow valley that was given to Burma (now Myanmar) during the merger agreement signed at Shillong on September 21, 1949 without the consent of the people of the state.

Speaking to media persons during a press conference, MDA convenor M Tombi, who is also president of state Shiv Sena unit said that in connection with the demand to give back the lands of Manipur, a memorandum has been submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister on September 6.

He said that the merger agreement was signed without the consent of the people of Manipur and Kabow valley was handed over to Burma during the merger agreement signed at Shillong on September 21, 1949.

Moreover, to solve the border dispute of India and Myanmar particularly on border pillar no. 81, a team led by the Surveyor General of India had come to the state for spot examination at the disputed areas. During the border survey, the zero point of the land demarcation was not identified properly, he added.

Proper information between the border pillars, including the subsidiary pillar, was not identified by the surveyor team. The present border pillar No 81 was shifted to Kwatha Khunou crossing the border of India territory, said Tombi.

The process of border fencing construction at border pillar No 80, 81 and 82 should be halted immediately till a proper solution on the border dispute is brought, he added.

Similar memorandum was also forwarded to Union Minister of State for External Affairs, RK Ranjan and he responded that the surveyor team will come to re-inspect the border dispute area, said the MDA convenor.
