Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president K Meghachandra on Tuesday termed the repeated summoning senior All India Congress Committee (AICC) leaders by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with money laundering case an act of political vendetta of the NDA government.

He stated this during the peaceful protest at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday against ED’s summons to senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi.

Addressing the media, Meghachandra said that repeated summoning of Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by the ED in connection with the National Herald Case is not appropriate. It is just an act of political vendetta carried out by the BJP government misusing ED, an agency that should remain free from any entities. MPCC will never accept such politics of NDA government that focuses on targeting or attacking opposition leaders from time to time. As such, the party will stand firm to fight against the repeated summon of their senior leaders, he added.

Meghachandra also clarified that Sonia Gandhi is not related not involved in the money laundering case. The Congress party just extended some support to National Herald by giving loan with no interest; the party provided the financial assistance to this paper which is presently struggling fund crunches as an act of benevolence, he added. Acknowledging the role played by this paper during the then independent movement, the Congress party had extended the support, the Congress president said.

If the senior Congress leaders had committed a mistake, they would have already been arrested. But not a single FIR had been lodged against the said senior Congress leaders. Therefore, there is no point in questioning them repeatedly by ED, he asserted while appealing to the BJP government to stop misusing ED.
