A 15-year-old girl, who attempted suicide by consuming poison after she was allegedly raped by her biological father, died Sunday around 9.40 pm at RIMS, sources said.
Speaking to the media, JAC co-convenor Akoijam Ongbi Jeteshori Devi said the minor girl was raped by her father on various occasions since 2016. Unable to bear the mental trauma, she attempted to commit suicide by consuming herbicide (pesticide) on July 31 at about 5.30 pm.
After staying three days at her home without treatment, she was hospitalised at JNIMS on August 3 but due to her serious condition she was referred to Shija Hospitals. On August 17, she was referred to RIMS due to financial condition.
Both her kidneys were reported to have failed, Devi said of the incident, adding that in spite of the best efforts by doctors, nurses, District Child Protection Unit Thoubal, Social Welfare department officials and police, the rape victim died.
She urged the judge, who is conducting the proceedings of the case, to issue capital punishment to the culprit.
In connection with the incident, Women police station, Thoubal has registered a case under section 305 IPC and section 6 of POCSO Act, 2012 and launched a probe into the matter.
The accused, who has been alleged of raping his own daughter since 2016, was arrested on August 5 after which an enraged mob destroyed his house. The accused was remanded into judicial custody by a court on August 15 based on a complaint filed by the Childline Thoubal that the accused raped his daughter on various occasions since 2016 under duress and intimidation.
According to the Childline Thoubal Official, an unknown person called up Childline number 1098 on August 4, saying that the girl had been hospitalised after consuming poison. The team rushed to the spot and took the statement of the victim who revealed that her father raped her since 2016 under intimidation.
The victim’s statement to the Childline also revealed that the victim approached her grandmother for help but she allegedly covered up the crime by intimidating her. She shared her woes to a few close friends and noted down the incidents in her diary.
It stated that she experienced some relief while staying at her aunt’s residence in 2020, but the physical and moral harassment from her father continued, she disclosed to the Childline. She attempted to stay at a boarding school after being enrolled at class-X but it was denied by her father, following which she decided to consume poison around 5.30 pm of July 31, according to her statement.
Wing Thoubal Chapter member Oinam Thoibi also urged the concerned court for capital punishment and to sentence him to life imprisonment.
