Residents of Yairipok Khoirom Mathak Leikai, Thoubal district on Sunday demonstrated a sit-in protest at Handpump Makhong community hall of Khoirom Mathak Leikai, Thoubal district, demanding that Minor Industrial Estate (MIE) plywood factories and sawmills be closed down.
The JAC Against the Establishing of the Khoirom MIE in Residential Area drew immediate attention of the chief minister and the authorities concerned on the matter and demanded to shut down the Minor Industrial Estate plywood factories and sawmills in Khoirom Mathak Leikai.
The locals demonstrated a sit-in protest and took out a public rally. The protesters demanded the state government to shut down or relocate the factory.
The noises from the mills affected the surrounding and disrupted the education of the students, one protester said. They further alleged the factories of deteriorating the condition of the road, and said that the pollutants emitted from the factories and the mills have severely affected the health of the environment and the local people.
The protesters also took out a rally at the vicinity of the sawmills and the plywood factories. In the rally, the protesters shouted slogans such as ‘We condemn setting up of plywood factories,’ ‘Relocate the factories,’ and ‘The factories are polluting the environment’ etc
