Proposal to set up Slopeland Research Institute in Senapati

A Slopeland Research Institute is being proposed to be set up at Senapati district in Manipur, said MP RK Ranjan at an event in Senapati.

MP Ranjan was addressing an Awareness Programme on ‘Cane & Bamboo and Its Application’ organised by Central Agricultural University (CAU), Imphal, Manipur and Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS) at Song Song Village, Senapati district on Saturday.

Mao is famous for agricultural products in Manipur apart from bamboo and therefore, the chief guest of the programme, RK Ranjan proposed to establish a Slopeland Research Institute under the initiative of the Central Agricultural University and another Hill University under the initiative of Manipur University, a release stated.

The president of the programme, MP Lorho S Pfoze, also expressed his willingness to set up the high-altitude research institutes under the initiative of the Central Agricultural University and the Manipur University as soon as possible, it stated. The Central Agricultural University has already agreed on it, he further added.

During the programme, apart from the distribution of bamboo, coconuts, avocado, beehive boxes, piglet and sprayers, Chief Minister-gi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) cards were provided to the villagers, it stated.

 Many demanded to organise more awareness programmes on cane and bamboo in the remaining district of Manipur especially in Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Chandel, Noney, Jiri, Ukhrul, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Kamjong districts, it added.

Before the programme started, both the MPs visited the sites where land subsidence occurred, the release stated adding the villagers of the area are taking refugees to the neighbouring areas due to its vulnerable situation.

During the investigation, there was a geologist and seismologist experts from Manipur University and the exact cause of subsidence will be found out soon, it added.

The awareness program was conducted with support from Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre (CBTC), Guwahati, Assam under North Eastern Council, Ministry of DoNER, Government of India.

MPs RK Ranjan and Lorho S Pfoze attended as the chief guest and president respectively of the programme, it stated. Vice chancellor, Central Agricultural University (CAU), Lamphelpat, professor M Premjit Singh; Registrar, Manipur University, professor W Chandbabu Singh; chairman, Song Song Village, Heni Kaikho, and vice president, The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Mayanglambam Khelendro Singh attended as the guests of honour, it added.
