Prime accused in Chingamakha blast arrested in Imphal

Two active cadres of a valley-based underground outfit have been arrested in connection with the September 8 Chingamakha blast.

A team of Imphal West district commandos have arrested two active cadres of a valley-based underground outfit in connection with the Chingamakha blast on September 8 and serving monetary demands to IMC councillors.

The arrested persons have been identified as Keshtrimayum Bhogendro Singh alias Yaiphaba, 41, son of late Ksh Kunjakeshwor Singh of Khongman Zone III and Aheibam Nabin Singh, 48, son of A Nabakumar Singh of Thangmeiband Yumnam Leikai.

SP Ksh Shivakanta of Imphal West on Monday told media at his conference hall at Babupara, Imphal West that the commando team, led by OC P Achouba Meitei of Imphal West commando, under the command of Addl SP (operation) and under his supervision conducted an operation at Khongman Zone III on Sunday.

The said operation was conducted acting on information about the presence of suspects involved in the planting of IED at Singjamei Chingamakha near the basketball ground on September 8, the SP informed.

During the operation, Bhogendro was detained at his residence and on preliminary interrogation, he disclosed that he is an active cadre of a valley-based underground outfit and started working for the said organisation in 2006 under the command of one Major Chaoba of the outfit.

Six electronic digital circuits, similar to the device used in IED planted at Singjamei Chingamakha, 119 monetary demand letters under the letterhead of the said outfit addressed to various government officials, corporators/councillors/pradhans and private persons and a pendrive were also seized from his possession, said Shivakanta.

Bhogendro further disclosed that he had made numerous monetary demands and threatening phone calls to the general public and government establishments. He also disclosed that the 6 electronic circuits were handed over to him by one major Bogen of Ayangpalli, Imphal East of the same outfit in which he had handed over 2 digital electronic circuits same as recovered from him to Nabin, said the senior police officer.

Both the persons were arrested in connection with the case registered at Singjamei police station for the planting of IED at Singjamei Chingamakha. Preliminary investigation revealed that Bhogendro is the man behind the planting of IED at Singjamei Chingamakha near Basketball ground on September 8. Shivakanta added that Bhogendro is also involved in another extortion case registered at Singjamei police station.

Both the persons were handed over to Singjamei police station along with the seizures and have been remanded for six days police custody after they were produced before the court, he added.
