Miscreants allegedly detonated a bomb at the gate of Congress party intending candidate Salam Joy’s residence near Naorem Chaprou Oil Pump under Wangoi Police Station, Imphal West in early hours of Wednesday.
“If you must kill someone, then kill me instead but please do not cause any harm to the people of Wangoi assembly constituency,” Salam Joy, 47, son of (L) Krishnadas told the media.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blast yet. However, four different UG groups had made demands from him through WhatsApp in the month of November, 2021, he said. But he did not think the motive behind the attack was political or carried out by UGs. “Because I had lost the election for three terms after winning in 2007, and my financial conditions are not good at present,” he added.
“Those who do not support me have been spreading the propaganda that Salam Joy has no money left to contest the election, and I believe UG groups must have heard about it. I suspect the attack was probably carried out by hired goons,” he said.
He lamented that the blast took place when the people of Wangoi assembly constituency are still affected by recent killing of two people by armed miscreants, while the bodies are yet to be collected as the JAC raised demands to the government after imposing bandhs.
He urged to immediately stop making Samurou a battlefield.
