Police personnel involved in drug cases will be jailed: Manipur CM Biren

Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh stated one-two years' jail term for any police personnel involved in drug-related case.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren on Friday termed the arrest of a security official in Assam with drugs unfortunate and warned that any police personnel involved in drug-related cases will be sent to jail for a period of at least one-two years.

Biren was speaking during the flagging off of a ‘Free eye check-up and spectacle distribution camp' to be held at Ukhrul under Netra Kumbh Manipur. The health camp was organised by SAKSHAM Manipur Prant in association with Peh Youth Organisation, Ukhrul.

Biren said three persons were arrested in Assam, including one constable in CID (security) office, Manipur Police. It is unfortunate that a police personnel was involved during the incident, he said.

"The government will not tolerate the police personnel reported to be personal security officer (PSO) of an MLA," the CM said.

Biren said police verification for the newly recruited Manipur police has been continuing and if any police personnel is found to be involved in drug-related cases, then necessary legal action will be taken which could be a period of one-two years' jail term.

The chief minister said the arrested person will be brought back to Imphal.

MLA Abdul Nasir, during the recent 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly session, had informed the House on March 3 that the owner of a drug consignment was arrested while a drug consignment was seized by police personnel. He also said that the details of the vehicles that was seized along with the drug will be available at state police department.

The MLA had appealed to the chief minister to take necessary steps to find out the owners and to arrest them which will help in ‘War on Drugs’.

Meanwhile, Biren said most of the villages settling near the surroundings of the located site of National Sports University have been compensated. He appealed to the people to stop encroaching on government land and said that those who are encroaching government land should leave the land immediately before stringent steps are taken by the state government.
