Overweight truck damages Barak bridge on Imphal-Jiribam NH-37

A truck transporting 560 cement bags bent the metals of the Barak Bridge due to the excessive weight.

An overloaded truck was stuck in Barak bridge at National Highway No 37 Imphal-Jiribam road on Friday after metals supporting the bridge got bent due to the excessive weight of the truck.

Police sources stated that the incident occurred at around 4.50 pm Friday when the truck bearing registration no (NL-01/AA 2036), coming from Silchar attempted to cross the bridge.

The driver of the truck has been identified as one Md Ayub khan, 37, son of Sirajuddin of Borayangbi Awang Maning Leikai. Police sources said that the driver took a challan of 300 cement bags though he was transporting a total of 560 cement bags.   

The permitted load capacity for passing the bridge is 24 ton. The average weight of a truck is 12 ton. The total weight of 560 cement bags is calculated to 28 ton and added with the weight of the truck, it was trying to pass the bridge with a total of 40 ton, police sources said. It is learnt that there are no weighbridges installed to measure the weight of trucks on this highway. 

Although the truck got pulled back, other trucks were stopped from passing the bridge till today as Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd commenced repair work.

Circle in charge of Bhartia Infra Projects Ltd Bappi Sarkar also lodged a complaint at Nungba Police Station against the truck which was found to be carrying beyond the permitted weight. An FIR was also registered by Nungba Police Station in connection with the matter.
