Opposing BJP candidates list, several workers torch party flags, banners in Imphal West

Opposing the list of BJP candidates announced by the party for the upcoming 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly election on Sunday, workers of BJP intending candidate of Sagolband assembly constituency, Khwairakpam Loken torched down BJP flags and banners at Sagolband Takhellambam Leikai, Imphal West.

Soon after the BJP announced the names of its candidates in New Delhi, workers of intending BJP candidate, Kh Loken, came out on Tiddim Road and burnt down BJP flag and banners and even tried to blocked the road.

To control the situation, a police team arrived but a confrontation took placed between the two, following which the police hurled tear gas shell towards the agitators. However, the agitators started blocking the Tiddim road by overpowering the police for a moment. Later, the police manage to controlled the agitators.

Loken told the media at Sega Road Takhellambam Leikai residence that he has resigned from the BJP party and will soon announce which political party he will be contesting.

The national BJP leaders had said earlier that the 2017 candidates who were defeated in margin line will be supported in the coming election. However, the central leaders failed to fulfil their assurance, he said. After witnessing the support from the public of Sagolband assembly constituency, he along with his supporters decided to contest from another political party, Loken said.

He further appealed to his supporters not to carry out any sort of violence for not getting BJP ticket.

Moreover, BJP intending candidate of Keishamthong assembly constituency, Nishikant Sapam, who was also not included in the candidate list, declared that he will be contesting as an independent candidate.

In a video posted on social media, Nishikant appealed to his workers not to resort to any sort of violence. He will remain with his promise and will be contesting as an independent candidate in Keishamthong assembly constituency, he said.

Another BJP intending candidate of Wangkhem assembly constituency, Thoubal district has also tendered his resignation from the party following the announcement of BJP tickets.

Interestingly, for Wangkhei assembly constituency, BJP ticket was given to former Congress MLA, Okram Henry Singh instead of sitting BJP MLA, Yumkham Erabot Singh.
