Operation Bluebird: 1987 Oinam incident remembered on 37th anniversary

The Poumai Naga Union (PNU) with its frontal organisations the Poumai Naga Women’s Union (PNNM) and Poumai Naga Students union (PNTM) on Tuesday observed the 37th commemoration of ‘Onae Reh Dah’, the Operation Bluebird, a tragic event that occurred on July 9, 1987.

The day began with a flag-hoisting ceremony at half-mast at the PNU office, PNTM and PNNM office which were attended by leaders and representatives from various capacities, stated a release.

In the evening, a candlelight service was held at Khabung Karong, where the service saw numbers of participants, including leaders, citizens, students, youth, children, and elderly individuals from all walks of life. Leaders from various capacities, living victims, villagers, intellectuals, and well-wishers attended the occasion, it stated.

Pani president PNU RB termed the day as a ‘victory day for the Nagas’ in his keynote address. However, the event was marked by tears and solemnity as the participants remembered the atrocities committed during the infamous Operation Bluebird, it stated. The president stated that the day was observed to respect and show solidarity to all the victims and to share the grief and pains of the victims from different villages, it added.

It further stated  that the operation resulted in 27 deaths, three rapes, five cases of sexual molestation, two forced public births, 340 instances of torture, 96 arrests and detentions, 125 houses burned, 175 houses dismantled, 10 churches dismantled, and six schools dismantled. Many victims’ stories remain unrecorded, it mentioned.
