Nupi Lal Numit 2022: Governor La Ganesan, CM Biren, ministers extend greetings to people in Manipur

Manipur Governor La Ganesan appealed to the people of Manipur to follow the path of the brave Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for their rights for a prosperous and peaceful state.

Manipur Governor La Ganesan, Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh and Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai extended greetings to the people of the state on the occasion of Nupi Lal Numit 2022, which falls on Monday, December 12.

The state observes Nupi Lal Numit every December 12 in celebration of the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of the women of Manipur. On this day in 1939, a large number of Manipur women strongly revolted against the oppressive economic and administrative policies of the then Manipur Maharaja and the British imperialists. They fought against rice export which had triggered artificial famine in the state. As many as 21 women were injured in the fight for the welfare of the state.

Recalling the event, the governor stated in his message that it is befitting to remember those large numbers of Manipuri women who stormed the state durbar office, demanding immediate stoppage of rice export, in which around 21 women were injured on December 12 of 1939.

“The day is remembered as Nupi (Women) Lal (War) Numit (Day). It is indeed, an event of great significance in the history of the state,” he added.

The revolt of women against the monopolistic administration signifies the importance of women in the state and their role in the society, it maintained.

He appealed to the people of Manipur to follow the path of the brave Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for their rights for a prosperous and peaceful state.

Remembering the brave Imas (mothers) of the state who fought in the ‘Nupi Lal’ against the exploitative might of the British imperialists, CM Biren said every year, the state observes December 12 as ‘Nupilal Numit’ as tribute to the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of the women of Manipur”.

Biren mentioned the continuing vital roles of the womenfolk in various aspects of the society, including sports, administration, medicine, entrepreneurship, art and culture.

“Kunjarani Devi, Mary Kom, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, Pukhrambam Sushila Chanu and Linthoi Chanambam are a few of our sportswomen who have shone bright in the international stage and demonstrated the courage and strength of our women,” he added.

Education Minister Th Basanta Kumar Singh also paid tributes to the brave women and stated that Nupi Lal is one of the important movements in the history of Manipuri women. It sowed the new seeds of economic and political reforms for a new Manipur, he said.

He mentioned that the Manipuri women have been known all over the world for their valour, skills and active involvement in many social, cultural and economic activities. He also appealed to the people of the state to follow the path of the brave Manipuri mothers who stood up against injustice and fought for a prosperous and peaceful state.

Water Resources Minister Awangbow Newmai extended greetings to the Imas of Manipur on the occasion of Nupi Lal and stated that the day is observed on December 12 every year for their selfless sacrifices and struggles made during the Nupi Lal movements.

Newmai called on the people to remember the courage and spirit shown by the women of Manipur who played a symbolic role in the historic Nupi Lal that broke out in 1939 as an agitation by the Manipuri women against the oppressive economic administrative policies of the Manipuri Maharaja and British political agent.
