The All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers’ Union (AMRTDMWU) has appealed to all to refrain from indulging in any kind of festivities on Drivers’ Day 2023.
Appealing against any kind of music concerts or festivities on Drivers’ Day 2023, AMRTDMWU secretary general Maimom Anil told mediapersons in Imphal West on Wednesday, "Drivers should cease work on this day".
Anil said the 34th Drivers’ Day, organised by the Joint Coordinating Committee, will be observed at the Inter State Bus Terminal, Khuman Lampak, Imphal from 10 am on Saturday, January 14.
January 14 is observed as Drivers’ Day following an incident in Nagaland where one transport truck driver and his assistant driver were killed by miscreants in 1990.
So far, a total of 334 highway transporters have been killed in different incidents, he added.
Saying that transport drivers are delivering their services day and night to provide essential commodities to the state, he appealed to the public to extend their respects to the transporters.
