National Highway 37 Affected Landowners Association on Saturday threatened to launch agitations and impose a blockade if the authority proceeds with the “unlawful eviction” of roadside residents and shops from part of the highway stretching from Oriental College to Keithelmanbi.

Speaking in a press meet held at Manipur Press Club, secretary of the association Irengbam Gandhajit said the association will commence a mass protests and blockade on Monday and Tuesday if the authority concerned failed to provide the necessary compensations to the affected landowners of the national highway connecting Imphal and Jiribam.

Even though the eviction order had been issued under RFCTLLAR Act, 2013, the affected landowners have not been provided with the necessary compensations under the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, he added. Condemning the authority for allegedly not providing a proper prior demarcation notice as well, he denounced the authority’s declaration of residents with ‘land pata’ as encroachers.

“We will not accept the exclusion of the roadside vegetable vendors and shops from providing the compensation. The eviction order must be withdrawn if the necessary compensations cannot be provided,” he said.

Denouncing the mandated eviction deadline of only 10 days as it is unreasonably insufficient, member of the association Kh Kalachand asserted that an eviction deadline of at least 3 months should be issued. Acknowledging that the road expansion is for the wellbeing of the public, he assured that the demands of the authority is not to cancel the expansion project but to provide the necessary compensations to the affected land owners.
