Nephew of Opposition leader appointed advisor to Manipur CM

Henry had resigned from the membership of the Indian National Congress and joined the BJP.

Former Manipur social welfare minister Okram Henry Singh was on Friday appointed as advisor to Chief Minister N Biren Singh with immediate effect.

Okram Henry Singh, nephew of former state chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who is also the Opposition leader in the Manipur Assembly, was elected as Congress party MLA from Wangkhei assembly constituency in the 2017 state legislative assembly elections.

During the vote of confidence in the state Assembly, Henry was among the eight MLAs who had skipped the assembly proceedings, defying the party whip for the trust vote.

Henry resigned from the membership of the Indian National Congress and later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). After he joined the BJP, the Biren-led government inducted him as state social welfare minister. However, the Manipur High Court recently declared his election result null and void.
