Narrow escape for BJP candidate as workers of rival JD-U candidate attack

Five injured, vehicles damaged during attack on MLA of Lilong assembly constituency, Y Antas Khan on Tuesday.

MLA of Lilong assembly constituency, Y Antas Khan, who is also a BJP candidate of the constituency reportedly had a narrow escape during an alleged attack carried out by workers of rival JD-U candidate Md Abdul Nasir by pelting stones and opening fire at around 11 pm on Monday, in front of Lilong Bazar Makha Oil pump in Lilong assembly constituency, Thoubal district.

During the alleged attack, four vehicles including a Fortuner car which the MLA was traveling in were damaged while five persons, including the escort driver of the MLA sustained injuries.

Protests against the alleged attack were organised at different places in Lilong assembly constituency by MLA Y Antas Khan’s workers who demanded punishment for the culprits.  

At a press conference held at Lilong Mayai Leikai, Antas khan’s escort driver Md Ashif Hussain, 25, son of Saheruddin from Lilong Haoreibi Makha Leikai said that they were visiting his relative at Lilong Bazar Makha Oil Pump when the incident took place.

He alleged that a group led by one Md Islamuddin who is a worker of JD-U candidate Md Abdul Nasir started physically assaulting him for being a worker of the MLA. He further alleged that the perpetrators also opened fire during the attack.   

More people joined the attack, and their vehicles were damaged, he said. However, the MLA had a narrow escape without getting injuries, he added. He vehemently condemned the attack while alleging that the attack could have been an attempt at their lives.

Along with the escort, five persons sustained injuries during the alleged attack. They are Y Nanao, 25, so of Md Islamuddin from Lilong Awang Leikai; Aslam Khan, 24, son of Gayajuddin from Lilong Leihaokhong; Md Jiaur Rahaman, 22, son of Mujibur Rahaman from Lilong Turel Ahanbi Mathak and Altaf, 30, son of Tahir Ali from Lilong Makha Leikai Salam Manung.

Ashif Hussain further said that glasses of the four vehicles including the MLA’s Fortuner were shattered during the attack.  He named one Md Islam, a JD-U worker and identified some of the alleged attackers. They are  Md Tajmal Shah from Lilong Alia Lambi; Md Noushad and Md Amuba from Lilong Bazar; Md Sayed Ahmed from near Lilong Haoreibi Upak-thong mathak  and Md Saddam Khan and Md Wahidur Rahman from Lilong Darool Uloom makha, and Md Hifjur Rahman from Lilong Haoreibi Awang leikai.

He appealed to the authority concerned to take immediate action and bring the alleged perpetrators to justice.
